The CAE Fidelis Lucina Maternal Fetal Simulator was developed for clinicians and interprofessional teams who manage normal deliveries as well as childbirth complications and obstetrical emergencies. The birthing simulator offers reliable, realistic training for childbirth maneuvers and emergency response when time is short and teamwork is essential.
Developed in partnership with leading educators and biomedical engineers, Lucina is the only childbirth simulator with validated maternal-fetal physiology. The physiological modeling allows learners to monitor and manage both patients without instructor intervention.
Developed in collaboration with Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica (INEB) at the University of Porto in Portugal.
With only 11 hospitals in North Dakota that deliver babies, emergency healthcare providers need to be well prepared to respond to any obstetrical scenario or emergency. Simulation in Motion-North Dakota (SIM-ND) purchased four Lucina Maternal Fetal Simulators for its mobile learning labs in order to deliver hands-on learning to 150 EMS units and 35 critical access hospitals that don’t offer routine OB services.
“The experiential learning style will definitely improve patient safety for some of our most vulnerable patients,” says SIM-ND Simulation Education Specialist Cheryl Stauffenecker.

Today, practice time in real clinical settings is limited and can be risky. With Lucina, learners gain hands-on experience performing normal deliveries and pelvic exams to recognize cervical dilation, effacement, presentation, position and station. Lucina also offers a better way to train medical teams for maternal emergencies from cardiac and respiratory arrest to shoulder dystocia and breech deliveries.
The emulated cardiotocograph (CTG) monitor displays maternal and fetal physiological data as well as an on-screen reproduction of the paper strip produced by a real CTG printer for a realistic virtual childbirth simulation.
The Lucina Maternal Fetal Simulator now offers the option to add a Female Patient Module with a non-gravid abdomen and five Simulated Clinical Experiences (SCEs) as a paid hardware upgrade. Use your Lucina simulator year-round as both an obstetrical patient and a non-gravid female patient. Users can also create their own SCEs on the Müse system.
The Müse interface includes ten evidence-based practice scenarios complete with patient history, documentation, learning objectives, facilitator’s notes for debriefing and more. Lucina also integrates with most of CAE Healthcare’s learning modules. Each learning module contains evidence-based training scenarios designed to immerse learners in a clinical environment. The scenarios include learning objectives, facilitator’s notes, equipment and supply list and software application.
CAE Healthcare has just released Urgent Obstetrical Situations, a new learning module for Lucina available for purchase today! For more information please click here.
Operating Lucina is simple with the standard Müse interface. The dashboard features a patient image, conditions and medications, streaming data from clinical monitors, a menu of Simulated Clinical Experiences (SCEs) and a timeline. The patient’s physiology and SCE can be preset so an instructor can focus on teaching.
