Following an official announcement made earlier this year, CAE Healthcare has expanded its interventional product line by becoming the U.S. and Canadian distributor for orthopedic, urologic and gynecologic simulators produced by the Swiss-based company, VirtaMed.
VirtaMed, founded in 2007, develops state-of-the-art virtual reality training tools for surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic interventions.
With the 2015 agreement, CAE Healthcare has rights to distribute VirtaMed's HystSim™, PelvicSim™, UroSim™ and ArthroS™ simulators. The VirtaMed ArthroS is a particularly unique arthroscopic simulator. Allowing orthopedic residents the opportunity to practice knee and shoulder surgery with real medical instruments in a risk-free environment, ArthroS helps to shorten the learning curve and improve patient safety.
“Our agreement with VirtaMed is the first step toward delivering a robust surgical simulation line to a broader array of specialties,” said Dr. Robert Amyot, President of CAE Healthcare. “Our aim is to offer the most innovative training solutions, and to continually release new modules that are aligned with the latest practices and procedures."
VIRTUAL REALITY SIMULATION TRAINING FOR ENDOSCOPIC PROCEDURES
The VirtaMed simulator family incorporates highly realistic graphics, bleeding and fluid behavior with superb tactile feedback. Learners can access an endless variety of pathologies and anatomies based on MRI and CT data from real patients. Individual training courses can be designed for beginners or advanced physicians. The feedback reports containing expert-defined metrics and videos of the virtual procedures are saved for each trainee and available for review.
The Swiss Society for Orthopedics and Traumatology integrated the VirtaMed ArthroS™ into its board certification exam for certification in 2014. VirtaMed has also incorporated the Fundamentals of Arthroscopic Surgery Training (FAST) that was mandated by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS), the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) in 2013 into the ArthroS™ training capabilities.
